Here's Alex and Tyler going for a hike in the woods for Memorial Day:

Here's Alex enjoying the warm weather:

The weather is finally starting to warm up here, so today we had the sprinkler out and the wading pool. Throw a few squirt guns in the mix, and everyone was bound to get wet, mom included! We've been enjoying our days going to the different parks and playing in the good old backyard. We try to keep things simple and not too busy, as Alex continues to adjust to being a part of our family. He loves to drive his little jeep. He will make circles on the driveway for hours at a time, if given the opportunity. I would say that Alex continues to grow more and more each day, both physically and intellectually. He surprised me at nap time today when I asked him to point to the yellow star and brown triangle, and he got both of them right! I'd say that's pretty good for a 34-month old that only knew the Russian language 3 months ago.
So yes, we've been procrastinating about a few items. Alex needs to go to the dentist, and possibly get his hearing and vision tested. The dentist definitely needs to happen, but not sure about his vision and hearing. He seems fine. Our pediatrician stated that he would prefer we at least get his hearing tested, so we probably will, but I think we will continue to wait. We also have some documents to fill out with the county, which include applying for a Minnesota birth record I believe. We also need to get his social security number. Ugh, paperwork! And before we know it, we will need to start working on our postplacement report! Hopefully the next time I post we will have accomplished something on the "to do" list.

So glad to see a post from you! Alex looks so big!! We haven't done all that extra paperwork either except apply for the SSN. The other stuff can wait we figure! Hope it isn't so long between posts next time!!!
Dear Patti and Matt, I came upon your blog quite by accident when I was trying to confirm the Russian word for "popsicle." I adopted my daughter, Masha, from St. Petersburg Region in December 2005. It was interesting to read your blog and see the similarities and differences in our adoption journeys. For a FYI, "kooka" is a baby version of the word "kookla" which means "doll" in Russian. I also would like to encourage you to have Alex's hearing tested. Ear infections in Russian orphanages are rarely treated because of the expense of antibiotics. As a result, many adopted children experience hearing problems--minor and major. I, personally, know a couple who didn't have their daughter tested until she had been home for six months. it turned out she had a profound hearing loss that was corrected by tubes. Both her language skills and behavior greatly improved after the surgery. Good luck to you. Claudia
Patti -
We've emailed a couple of times. I adopted my daughter from Baby Home #2 in July 2007. Madeline had her hearing tested a few months after we got home. She scored low on the hearing scale and it was determined that she had fluid in her ears. She had tubes put in her ears (pretty quick process) and now she scores in the normal range for hearing. Email me privately if you have any questions. (nygriggs@adelphia.net)
The picture in the woods is so cute.
I know what you mean about procrastinating with those things. I know I have things I'm supposed to be filling out but I'd rather not look at paper and check lists right now.
Alex and Tyler are so cute and look to be getting along very well. We too have been trying to get all our paperwork completed while we are still organized. So glad things are going so well and Alex is quickly picking up the English language.
